Overview

GRASP is a 501(c) (3) non-profit charitable education organization funded by school systems, foundations, businesses and individual donors that assists students and families obtain funding for post-secondary education.  Our goal is to ensure that every student has an equal opportunity for continuing education after high school, regardless of financial or social circumstances.

GRASP advisors, the heart of the program, are placed at participating  Virginia high schools, schools for students with disabilities and Boys and Girls Clubs. These part-time professionals are adept at navigating the college financial aid system and the processes required to make a post-secondary educational plan a reality.

Advisors assist students and their families with the financial aid process, primarily through individual in-school meetings, but also through presenting financial aid seminars in libraries and other public forums. Advisors access institutional, federal, state and community resources to allow students to implement an education plan beyond high school.  Funds are available to many students, but benefiting from these funds requires completing a complicated process of forms and documents within specific deadlines.  Depending upon the circumstances of the student, the development of an educational plan may include the possibilities of attending and paying for continuing education at a community college, technical/vocational school, or public or private four-year college or university.

GRASP’s reach spans an increasing number of public and private schools and is distinguished by its policy of channeling more than half of its resources to those who are significantly financially challenged.  GRASP financial aid advisors work weekly with students in their high school or Boys and Girls Club, encouraging a positive attitude and assisting in the development of an educational plan beyond high school.  Regardless of a family's circumstances, GRASP financial aid advisors help students overcome challenges to participating in the dream of an education after high school.
